Pete Rose has dealt with a lot of adversity over the years. Whilst I don’t condone what he did during his managerial days, I do respect his on-field mastery with his baseball bat.
I remember thinking years back about this and I honestly didn’t care one bit that he gambled on baseball. No human being is perfect, we all make mistakes.
If we were to rank the sins committed by the masses, gambling on baseball is a pretty low compared to cold-blooded murder. So for that, I forgive him. In fact I forgave him when I had heard that he had committed this “sin”.
There are far more evil people in the world and many of them get away with their crimes. Pete bet on baseball and it costs him his bread and butter, or more importantly it tarnished what he should be measured against. What he did on the diamond.
What is even more immeasurable is the level of stupidity of those who continually ask him about his gambling. Leave him alone and let the man walk in peace.
For Pete’s sake, give him a break. He deserves to be in the hall of fame.
